Chapter 16

I secured Rickard’s blackmailer with a couple of the man’s spare belts and used a pillowcase to cover his eyes and muffle his ears. A washroom stood adjacent to Rickard’s little suite, and I dragged the unconscious body through the door and left him in a worn copper bathtub. The man’s airways were clear, and he wouldn’t be able to scramble free in a hurry, so I considered him properly neutralized and closed the door behind me as I stepped out to speak to Rickard.

The foreman had already cracked open a fresh bottle, had his feet up on the table, and gestured for me to join him. I took a seat beside him, quickly ran through what I needed in my head, and realized that the unconscious idiot in the bathroom would create new problems. I hadn’t expected to find Rickard under pressure like this, but I reminded myself not to push the man too hard.

I reached into my jacket, pulled out the drawstring pouch of coin, and dropped it on the table beside Rickard’s ankle. The man’s eyes widened as he heard the weight of the bag, but he left it where it was and glanced up at me with a flash of gratitude.

“That’s for the weapons and the associated risks,” I said.

“Wouldn’t have cost you that much, mate,” Rickard said. “Especially after what you did for me. You look like you’re in a hurry. I’ve got the knives together, but the lazy bastards said they’d give me the whole thing in one package tomorrow night.”

I nodded. “We’re stocked up enough. But it’s always nice to have spares.”

Rickard let out a low whistle. “You do move fast. Where are you holed up?”

I debated telling him the actual location for a moment, and he took another pull at his bottle with a sigh of appreciation. “You know what, better I don’t know. Although they must’ve been loaded if you managed to snag this kind of coin off them.”

I reminded myself for a second time to sit down and figure out how the currency of the city worked. I’d been so hellbent on survival, evading capture, and setting plans into motion that I hadn’t slowed down enough to appreciate the smaller things in my environment.

“So, you don’t need weapons, and you don’t need money.” Rickard tipped the neck of his bottle toward me. “And I smell a fellow mercenary before me. You don’t do favors for no reason. So, you need something else.”

I nodded. “I need to speak to Carrow.”

Rickard choked. “Fucking hell, mate, you don’t take half-measures.”

“I’m working on the Clinkers, but there’s too many of them around the Church. Only way that we’re getting in there is in irons or with an army. I don’t like either option. Carrow might have the resources to pull Ferris out of there, or at least have enough sway to give us some options.”

Rickard held up a hand. “Let me stop you there for a moment, Charlie.”

I let my sentence trail off and braced myself for bad news.
